Here at International Bird Rescue, our mission to train and inspire the next generation of wildlife rehabilitators and advocates goes beyond our California clinics. We find collaborative opportunities with students of all ages and areas of study. This spring, we worked with a team of Public Relations (PR) students from California State University, Fullerton on their senior project to provide pro-bono PR support to a non-profit and practice the professional skills they’d developed over the course of their studies.
Members of our Education and Development team spent time getting to know the students and put them to work on a couple of ongoing projects: special event promotion and community engagement efforts. The group was introduced to Bird Rescue’s history, mission, and ongoing work within the community. We arranged for some of the students to join our experienced volunteers at public outreach events to learn and offer fresh insight and advice.
“Having the opportunity to work on a PR plan with International Bird Rescue allowed me to apply my academic knowledge into a real-world scenario to gain hands-on experience,” said team member Rachel Inaba. “My team members and I can’t thank Angie and Bird Rescue enough for trusting and supporting us throughout this process!”
“Working with Bird Rescue gave me a new perspective of the work that non-profit organizations do for the world!” added Inaba.
Through student collaborations like this one, we hope to spread awareness of our work and the birds that we care for while providing opportunities for kids and young adults to gain valuable work experience and insight into the nonprofit world. We also extend our thanks and congratulations to the PR team for their excellent work and recent graduation. We wish them the best in their future careers and hope they will continue to be a voice for waterbirds in need!
