As students head back to class this fall, we’re reflecting on the inspiring work that took place last semester through our ongoing partnership with Rice University’s Environmental Management class. Over the past few years, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with these students to help creatively share messages that matter for birds and the planet.
Each year, students in the class take on real-world challenges to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues. This year, they tackled two topics that deeply impact birds: climate change and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu.
To help spread the message, the students created short, engaging videos designed for social media platforms. Some featured hand-drawn animations, while another included interviews with fellow students. Social media is a powerful tool to reach younger audiences who may not yet be aware of the specific threats birds face. These videos help make environmental science accessible and actionable.
“The students consistently bring fresh ideas and exciting new ways to engage others,” said JD Bergeron, CEO of Bird Rescue. “Getting to participate in the presentations is always a highlight of our season. We’re inspired by their creativity and storytelling!”
We’re proud to support the next generation of advocates who are using their skills and platforms to speak up for birds. A special thanks to our Board member Dr. Maria Hartley, adjunct professor at Rice University, for making this valuable collaboration possible.
