International Bird Rescue (“Bird Rescue”) cares for sick, injured, abused, and orphaned aquatic birds at two year-round wildlife care centers in California – one in Los Angeles, the other in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bird Rescue is a member of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) administered by UC Davis.

Bird Rescue also maintains the Alaska Wildlife Response Center (AWRC) located in Anchorage. Major funding for the Center is provided by the following oil spill response organizations: Alaska Clean Seas (ACS), Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, Alaska Chadux Network, Navy Supervisor of Salvage, Cook Inlet Spill Prevention and Response (CISPRI), Southeast Alaska Petroleum Response Organization (SEAPRO).

Our rehab team routinely cares for a variety of species. Among the most commonly treated include Brown Pelicans, Western Gulls, Northern Fulmars, Western Grebes, American Coots, Common Loons, Black-crowned Night-Herons, Snowy Egrets, and Great Blue Herons.

Common human-caused injuries to aquatic birds include habitat destruction, plastic pollution, fishing hook lacerations, and fishing line entanglements.

While Bird Rescue specializes in treating seabirds and other aquatic birds, the organization is also capable of working with non-aquatic birds, including owls, hawks, doves, finches, hummingbirds, pigeons, sparrows, and wild turkeys.
